Horserace Betting Levy Board Veterinary Research Training Scholarship


To support postgraduate equine veterinary research training. The study establishment is responsible for the appointment of research scholars. Awards can start at any point in the year following award. Grants for other types of research projects are available.


Open to holders of a veterinary degree who wish to undertake full-time training in research in the equine veterinary field leading to a PhD.

Study Length

Up to 3 years, subject to satisfactory progress

Award Value

UK £21,484 stipend in 1st year, with increments for 2nd and 3rd years. UK £4498 (accountable) per year for fees and expenses, and UK £5847 (unaccountable) per year to the department in which the holder works. Scales are reviewed annually.

Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB)

The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) operates in accordance with the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Act 1963. It assesses and collects contributions from bookmakers and the Horserace Totalisator Board and uses these for the advancement of equine veterinary science and education and other improvements within the horseracing industry.
