To assist artists, musicians, writers, inventors, singers, actors and dancers of all descriptions who are unable to pursue their vocation by reason of their poverty.
Open to artists over 30 years of age, born in the British Isles of British parents and grandparents born after 1900. These qualifications are mandatory and applicants who do not qualify in all respects should not apply.
maximum award would be £1,000 but, in exceptional circumstances, the Trustees may consider making a larger award.

The Oppenheim-John Downes Memorial Trust makes annual awards in December to deserving artists of any kind unable to pursue their vocation by reason of poverty. Awards are restricted to persons over 30 years of age, who are natural born British subjects (S 34 of the Race Relations Act applies).
